since i've reclaimed the study from all the boxes and assorted tat, i've started to use my mac pro again for photo editing and not my mac book pro anymore. i've also upgraded to 4x 250 GB sata disks and 5 GB ram now too 
still running 10.4.11. not sure if it's worth upgrading to 10.5.
also, gimp 2.4 is awesome
